We had three games at the front of the trip and three games scheduled
on the back end, but in between we scheduled a weekend stay with some
extended family of mine in Buffalo. On the way though, we stopped at
Niagara Falls because neither of us had ever been there and how often do
you get to see such natural wonders?!!
We checked
things out from the Canada side because that's where everyone who knew
anything about it said we'd find the better views. The views did not
disappoint; they were every bit as impressive as we had heard. I was struck by the sheer power, the sound, and the beauty of Niagara Falls.
After checking out the Falls, we took a
little time to just walk around some of the beautiful gardens and other
areas nearby. While doing this, we happened upon a little chapel that
was hosting a concert that night. The artist was busy doing sound checks
with her guitar as we poked our heads in the door. We noticed a flier
for the concert and were surprised to learn her identity: Elisabeth Von Trapp, the granddaughter of Maria and Baron Von Trapp of The Sound of Music fame.
At the time I didn't yet realize that I would spend the majority of the following summer in Hungary on a mission trip. While there, we got one weekend off and a group of us visited Salzburg, Austria, where The Sound of Music is set. I did the most "touristy" thing imaginable and went on The Sound of Music Tour, seeing the famous gazebo, the church where the wedding was, and the very hills that were "alive with the sound of music." Alas, in 1995 my streak of summers with connections to The Sound of Music came to an end at two.
From Niagara Falls, it was on to Buffalo where we settled in for a little break and some relaxation. What a great trip this was already proving to be!
